Benton Harbor battles blight, new program begins March 31

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. -- The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety's Code Compliance Division will launch Beautify Benton Harbor, a citywide initiative to aimed at reducing blight and improve residents' quality of life. This will begin on March 31.

Code compliance officers will conduct property inspections across all four city wards to identify and address ordinance violations from March 31 to Sept. 30. Authorities say, property owners that have violated the city code of ordinances will be notified via mail and pink door tags with a timeline for compliance.

The Beautify Benton Harbor program will address vacant buildings, structural issues, overgrown lots, illegal dumping, and other concerns affecting the city's appearance and safety.

"The Beautify Benton Harbor initiative will contribute to a healthier, safer, and more vibrant community by reducing blight and improving property conditions," a city spokesperson said. "Cleaner neighborhoods enhance property values and promote a sense of pride and well-being among residents. This effort is crucial in revitalizing Benton Harbor and ensuring a better quality of life for all who live and work here."
