Motorcyclist suffers catastrophic injuries in Elkhart County crash Thursday, driver arrested

ABC 57

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- The Elkhart County Sheriff's Office reports one person is suffering catastrophic injuries following a crash around 3:42 p.m., Thursday, that occurred on US 20 near CR 43.

Officers say that 18-year-old Logan Conklin was traveling west on US 20 behind other vehicles, when a vehicle in front of Conklin attempted to make a left turn onto CR 43.

The vehicle directly in front of Conklin passed the turning vehicle on the shoulder, that's when Conklin attempted to pass both vehicles by going off-road into the grass.

Conklin then lost control of his vehicle and re-entered the road in a spin and went into the opposite lane, narrowly missing one motorcyclist and crashing into another.

The motorcyclist, identified as 57-year-old, Donald Shoemake, suffered catastrophic injuries, including a severed left foot and a broken arm.

Conklin was found to be under the influence of cannabis and unable to safely operate a motor vehicle. A Drug Recognition Evaluation (DRE)
was administered to Conklin, to which he failed. Conklin also submitted to a SoToxa Oral Fluids Drug test which tested positive. Conklin then submitted to a blood draw and those results are pending toxicology testing.

Conklin was taken to the Elkhart County Jail for a Level 4 Felony charge of Operating While Intoxicated causing catastrophic bodily injury. He was also cited for Improper Passing and Driving Left of Center.
