St. Joseph County police investigating Bypass incident from Saturday night
ST JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- Wild scene on the US 20/31 Bypass over the weekend, with cars blocking the entire road, as racers did donuts and shot off fireworks in honor of a South Bend man killed in Illinois.
St. Joseph county police calling the scene dangerous, irresponsible and unacceptable, and vowing to track down the drivers involved.
It was a chaotic scene here on the Saint Joseph Valley Parkway Saturday night, and while no injuries were reported, that doesn't mean this type of thing is harmless.
"You knew something was going on, but like it reminded me a lot of the fast and the furious movies, people doing burnouts, so I was just more confused," said Brandon Woodcox, who lives near where the incident happened.
Cars doing burnouts and donuts, fireworks being shot into the sky, leaving those who live nearby perplexed and displeased.
St. Joseph County police say it's estimated to be between 30 and 50 vehicles involved, traveling through the area at high rates of speed.
Social media posts that have circulated online say this event was to honor Martin Issac Cantu Morillo, a 21-year-old South Bend man who was allegedly killed in Illinois.
Those who live right off the area where the incident took place weren't thrilled and were surprised at how long it went on.
"We were sitting there and heard some squealing out and I thought it would be over within a few seconds, so no use in getting up to go see, but it wasn't a few seconds, it was ten minutes of burning out, v8 engines going at it," said Randy Woodcox, who lives near where the incident took place.
St. Joseph County police are still actively reviewing information related to the incidents and say they will be discussing criminal charges with the prosecutor's office.
