BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. -- A wreck between a Dodge pickup hauling a camper trailer, a Kenworth Semi Tractor pulling two dump trailers with 160,000 pounds of gravel, and a Chevy Equinox ended up entangled on I-196 in Berrien County Friday morning, resulting in the death of the Chevy's driver.

The Berrien County Sheriff's Office and emergency crews were called to the scene at 5:11 a.m. on Dec. 13.

Crash investigators say the Dodge pickup truck and camper was being driven north on I-196 by 26-year-old Tyler Jackson, of North Carolina, when a vehicle that was attempting to pass him on the left swerved towards the truck as it passed causing Jackson to make an evasive maneuver.

"Jackson lost control of his vehicle and struck a guardrail and Jack-knifed sliding to a stop blocking both lanes of travel," the BCSO said.

"A northbound Chevy Equinox driven by Jimmy Cunningham Jr, 58 of Mishawaka, was travelling behind the camper and swerved to the left to avoid the truck but struck the Dodge in the front and then struck the guardrail coming to rest on the left shoulder of the road."

Not long after the two initial crashes, a Kenworth Semi Tractor pulling two dump trailers with 160,000 pounds of gravel tried to slow but also veered to the left shoulder to avoid the Dodge.

The semi struck the Chevy that was now stopped on the shoulder creating a chain reaction that caused the dump truck to slide towards the median and the rear trailer ended up sliding sideways and flipping over dumping it’s load and separating the dump box from the trailer frame.

Cunningham Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene and taken to the Western Michigan School of Medicine in Kalamazoo for Autopsy.

The semi-truck was driven by 59-year-old Dale Shepler, of Pentwater, Mich., who just picked up a load of gravel in Niles and was headed to Ludington.

Authorities say road conditions and alcohol/drugs are not factors in this crash.

The vehicle that was passing the Dodge pickup has not been identified and no description was obtained by authorities.
