Work on Western Avenue starts August 22

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Road work on a section of Western Avenue begins on Monday, the City of South Bend Department of Public Works announced.

Starting Monday, NIPSCO will begin maintenance work on a gas line at the Mayflower Road intersection of Western Avenue.

From August 22 to September 13, the eastbound lanes of Western, from Mayflower to 300 feet east of the intersection, will be closed.

From September 13 to 15, both the eastbound and westbound lanes in this area will be closed.

From September 15 to October 5, the eastbound lanes will reopen but the westbound lanes will stay closed.

All closings are weather-dependent.

Access to businesses in the area will be maintained.

The detour route will use Sample Street via Mayflower or Chapin Street.
