Woman in critical condition following Tuesday night fire in Sturgis
STURGIS, Mich. -- The Sturgis Department of Public Safety reports crews responded to a structure fire in the 400 block of Center Avenue around 10:22 p.m., Tuesday.
Dispatch advised responding crews a woman and child were trapped inside the home.
Authorities say the first arriving officers attempted to enter the second story of the home, where the woman and child were thought to be.
Crews had to turn back due to heavy smoke and heat.
As fire units arrived on scene, authorities say it was determined the child had been able to get out of the house, but the woman was unaccounted for.
The report states firefighters then made entry into the home and found the woman on the first floor.
The woman was removed from the home and found to be unresponsive.
CPR was initiated on scene and the woman was taken to the Sturgis Hospital helipad to be taken by Medflight to Bronson Methodist Hospital.
The report states when the woman was being taken by Medflight, she had regained consciousness.
The woman is currently listed in critical condition.
The report states additional firefighters on scene quickly extinguished the fire preventing its further spread.
The home sustained significant smoke and fire damage throughout the first and second story.
The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation by the Sturgis Department of Public Safety Fire Marshal along with the Michigan State Police Fire Marshal Division.
