ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart Police Department reports a 48-year-old woman has been arrested and charged after allegedly fleeing from police in a stolen vehicle on March 20.

The suspect, identified as Sarah Bender, is also accused of striking a police car and a second vehicle with the vehicle she was driving.

The Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office has charged Bender with Auto Theft, a Level 6 Felony, Resisting Law Enforcement, a Level 6 Felony, Operating While Intoxicated-Endangerment, a Class A Misdemeanor, and three counts of Leaving the Scene of an Accident, each a Class B Misdemeanor.

Her bond has been set at $10,000.

EPD reports a call came in around 8:57 p.m., on March 20, regarding a stolen vehicle.

The caller told police that Bender, someone he knows, had taken his Toyota Tundra without permission from the 54000 block of Oakwood Street.

An Officer responded to the area of Bristol Street and Silver Street around 9:01 p.m., where Bender was said to be traveling south on Silver.

The officer was traveling north on Silver with his emergency lights activated when Bender struck the squad car before continuing south.

The report states the officer continued the pursuit west onto Bristol before Bender rear-ended a Honda Fit, causing it to slam into the Honda Civic in front of it.

No injuries were reported in this crash.

Shortly after, police say Bender pulled over into the parking lot at 349 W. Bristol St. where she came to a stop.

Officers detained Bender without further incident.

Authorities say Bender showed signs of being under the influence, leading to an officer applying for and obtaining a blood draw search warrant.

Bender was taken to the hospital for the blood draw, and the results are still pending.
