MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- The Washington Park Zoo announced the death of their 20-year-old Bengel tiger, Stripes, Monday morning.

Zoo officials say Stripes was successfully receiving veterinary care pain management and medication for kidney disease and arthritis, but he began showing rapid deterioration in his health.

His appetite became diminished, and activity levels declined, zoo officials said.

Zoo officials say that's when the difficult decision was made to humanely euthanize Stripes before his quality of life worsened.

Officials said, "Final pathology reports would later discover that he was suffering from kidney failure, lymphedema, and cancer which is often found in older tigers."

Stripes arrived at the zoo in 2005 with his brother, Stars, from an Iowa zoo.

Stripes was preceded in death by Stars, who passed away in 2023 due to complications from chronic kidney disease.

Striped celebrated his 20th birthday on Oct. 15, 2024.

Zoo officials say that made him one of the oldest Bengal tigers in human care.

In the wild, tigers typically live between 10 and 14 years, officials said.
