VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. - A new K9 deputy is joining the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office, and the pup’s name honors a fallen member of the department.

K9 Jett is a 14-month-old German Shepard and Belgian Malinois mix. He’s named after Deputy James Allen Lear, who died on December 10, 2021.

According to the department, Deputy Lear was given the nickname “Jett” because he’d often “jet” off to do a job without needing to be prompted.

Sheriff Daniel Abbott said he’s proud to carry on Deputy Lear’s work ethic and dedication to public service through K9 Jett.
