Valentine's Day hit-and-run leaves bicyclist with life-threatening injuries, MCPD investigating

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- The Michigan City Police Department is investigating a hit-and-run incident involving a bicyclist and a Jeep which occurred on Feb. 14.

Police say the La Porte County Regional Dispatch Center received a call regarding a bicyclist being struck at the intersection of S. Woodland Avenue and Pear Street around 6:50 p.m. on Valentine's Day.

Officers arrived on scene to find a 50-year-old woman suffering from life-threatening injuries.

The victim was taken to Franciscan Health Hospital before being transferred to a South Bend hospital for more advanced medical treatment.

Authorities say the initial investigation determined a white or silver colored Jeep SUV was traveling north on S. Woodland Avenue when it struck the bicyclist at the intersection of Pear Street.

The driver of the Jeep then left the scene, proceeding north on S. Woodland Avenue.

Police say the suspect vehicle was last seen turning west on E. Barker Avenue from S. Woodland Avenue.

The report states the Jeep will have right front-end damage consistent with impacting a black colored bike.

The Traffic Division and Evidence Response Unit also responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.

Investigators collected several articles of evidence, interviewed witnesses, and searched the area for video surveillance.

Police say they're working to identify the suspect, the suspect vehicle, find video surveillance, and collect more evidence.
