UPDATE: Police release names of victims in Olive Street shooting
ST. JOSEPH CO., Ind. -- The Saint Joseph County Metro Homicide unit was on scene for about 5 hours on Monday, diagramming the evidence and trying to piece together the facts of Sunday’s double murder turned shootout.
Police say 53-year-old Johnnie Avance was shot inside his home on Olive Street. According to neighbors, Avance could usually be found sitting in his chair at the top of his driveway, chatting with friends and neighbors.
One of his many neighborly friends was the second victim, 55-year-old Donald Paris Senior. Paris lived just across the street from Avance.
Paris’ family says he walked his dog around the block every morning. But on Sunday, he got caught in the gunfire as he was returning home.
Witnesses say it was Brandon Biffle, who ran out of Avance’s house and shot Paris multiple times in the chest and head before turning the gun on police.
Three officers opened fire on Biffle, hitting him and injuring him.
Biffle was taken to Memorial Hospital where he is still being treated.
Avance’s family was on scene today, but police say the family will not have access to the home until later this week. Meanwhile, Paris’ family is already setting up a memorial to honor him.
We now know the names of the gunman and the two men who were killed in the Sunday morning shootings in the 100 block of N. Olive St.
The man accused of gunning down two others is now recovering from gunshot wounds himself.
Witnesses said it was Brandon Biffle who shot and killed 53-year-old Johnnie Avance and 55-year-old Donald Wayne Paris, Sr.
The Prosecutor's Office said autopsies on both victims are scheduled for Tuesday.
County Metro Homicide Unit is still investigating the shooting.
