ELKHART, Ind. - Notre Dame sophomore Spencer Vermeule from Cambridge, Mass., passed away Saturday after being involved in a car crash in Elkhart County.

University of Notre Dame President Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., joined with the campus community in mourning the passing of Vermeule.

“We are deeply saddened by Spencer’s tragic death. On behalf of the entire Notre Dame community, I extend our deepest sympathies to the Vermeule family, and offer prayers of comfort and peace to Spencer’s family, friends and all who knew and loved him," said Father Jenkins.

The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the crash.
