Trump administration's proposed budget could be putting the future health of Lake Michigan at risk
ST. JOSEPH, Mich. -- Memorial Day weekend is typically when Lake Michigan once again comes to the forefront, with many flocking to the beaches and lakeshore communities for summer fun.
Some advocates say government cuts and the Trump administration's proposed budget could be putting the future health of Lake Michigan and the other great lakes at risk.
Don Jodrey is an advocate on behalf of the Great Lakes, and has been on Capitol Hill working with House and Senate members to try and preserve and protect bodies of water like Lake Michigan. He is concerned about future funding for the Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes research, or CIGLR. It's a collection of 10 universities that do research projects that benefit the Great Lakes.
One of CIGLR's responsibilities is to monitor harmful algae on Great Lakes like Michigan and Erie and see whether the water is safe to drink and safe for recreation. The grants that fund CIGLR are being held up, and layoffs could be imminent, potentially leaving the lakes vulnerable.
