ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- The Elkhart County Sheriff's Office responded to a crash on U.S. 20 on Thursday morning that sent one person to the hospital with neck and back pain.

Authorities say, A 2002 Ford Taurus driven by 25-year-old Connor Simpson of Elkhart was heading east on U.S. 20 -- east of U.S. 33 -- at a high rate of speed around 6:20 a.m. when his Ford struck a 2010 Honda Civic that was also going east on U.S. 20.

"The passenger side front end of [the Ford] struck the driver’s side of [the Honda] causing [the Honda] to swerve and exit the roadway to the south, drive down the embankment and come to a stop in a field," the ECSO said.

The driver of the Honda was 58-year-old Elio R Alas Guerra of Elkhart. He transported to Elkhart General Hospital with complaints of chest and back pain.

Authorities say two citations were issued.  Guerra was cited for distracted driving and Simpson was cited for speed.
