Three injured in crash involving firetruck and ambulance

ABC 57

LA PORTE, Ind. -- The La Porte County Sheriff's Office reports deputies responded to the area of US 35 just north of the intersection at W Johnson Road for a two-vehicle crash around 7:53 a.m. Sunday.

The report states an ambulance was traveling north on US 35, responding to a personal injury vehicle crash. The driver had his emergency light on at this time.

The ambulance driver told authorities they then received a disregard call for the crash, at which point he turned his emergency lights off, pulled off the roadway to the right, stopped, looked, and began to make a U-Turn to turn south on US 35.

The driver said he didn’t see the Blue Spartan Firetruck as he started to turn.

The firetruck then collided with the driver's side of the ambulance.

The ambulance driver made complaints of a severe headache and was taken to Franciscan Health Michigan City.

The firetruck driver told authorities he was driving north on US 35, also responding to a reported personal injury vehicle crash.

The firetruck driver stated his emergency lights were still activated as they had also just received the disregard call for the crash.

Right as the firetruck driver went to turn his lights off, he said he saw the ambulance begin to turn, at which point he attempted to avoid the crash but was unable to.

The firetruck driver didn't require immediate medical attention but was later taken to Northwest Health La Porte.

The ambulance's passenger corroborated what the driver said and added he could see the firetruck traveling down the road with lights activated.

The ambulance passenger complained of pain in his left arm and was taken to Franciscan Health Michigan City.
