Teen driver sent to hospital after Wakarusa crash Monday morning

WAKARUSA, Ind. -- Rainy conditions and low visibility were likely factors in a crash that sent one driver to the hospital Monday morning at the intersection of S.R. 19 and C.R. 32 in Wakarusa.

The Elkhart County Sheriff's Office got the call around 7:11 a.m. and the preliminary investigation shows that a 2012 Chevrolet Impala was being driven east on C.R. 32 by a 16-year-old boy from Wakarusa when it failed to yield the right of way at the intersection and crashed into a 2010 Nissan Rogue being driven by a 35-year-old Bristol man.

"[The Impala] continued east into the intersection into the path of [the Rogue] causing it to strike [the Rogue] in the driver’s front with the front of [the Rogue]," the ECSO said. "[The Rogue] had full airbag deployment.

The teen driver complained of hip pain from the impact and was transported by EMS to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment of non-incapacitating injuries. The driver of the Rogue was uninjured.

There were no noticeable equipment issues with the involved vehicles, which both had to be towed from the scene.

The teen was cited for failure to yield the right of way and authorities say drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor.
