Steph Curry's Underrated Golf Tour comes to Michiana
SOUTH BEND, Ind. --Four-time NBA Champion Steph Curry brought his Junior golfers on the Underrated Golf Tour to Warren on the third location of their four-leg tour.
Available to 96 players, split between boys and girls, ages 12-18, the tour brings in the best from across the globe.
In its third year of existence, the reach and culture of the program is changing the game of golf.
"Everything that underrated stands for access, equity and opportunity," Tour participant Lena Durette said.
This year, the opportunity provided upcoming college participants the chance to compete on a collegiate course.
"There's so many great college courses across America to be here at Warren golf courses, our introduction to college golf for these players is outstanding. We are going to try to keep this in the road of moving forward always go and play at a college course", Underrated Golf Director of Golf Operations Rob Roxborough said.
"Honestly, you know, I would never play any of these courses if it wasn't for underrated. So it's pretty awesome," Tour participant Sophia Macias added.
"The opportunities, it's not just on the golf course, it's off the golf course. Because the mentors that are out here, and the people that are in golf, in the business world and on the actual course, are giving us these skills, and these opportunities that are gonna allow us to do big things in college and pass College," Event participant Duncan Reid mentioned.
The tour is a fully paid experience, from travel, food, hotels, etc.
"This is my third year on the underrated tour. It's always a great experience coming out here competing on the top courses against the best competition," Reid added.
When mentioning some of the best competition, Duncan can't forget about his brother Thomas.
"My brother qualified for the Curry Cup last year, and we've been playing solid golf on the Underrated Tour. I'm not going to put nothing out there. The scores are out there," Duncan said.
A rare case of siblings. Others met at the beginning of their Underrated journey, but in the end, it's a mixture of competition and friendship.
"We all just love each other a lot. But also, we're all trying to beat each other at the same time. On the last day, we all go and watch the winner and they give us water bottles. So, since we're underage, you don't have champagne," Durette said laughing, "we can all go spray the wind and just shows the community," Durette added.
After South Bend, the tour has one last stop in San Antonio, TX August 7-9. Next will be the Curry Cup, where the top 24 boys and girls (12 each), will compete in Paramus, NJ September 2-5.
