State Road 19 construction a headache for Elkhart drivers

ELKHART, Ind. -- A huge construction project in Elkhart has drivers making detours left and right.

Crews are making lane changes on State Road 19. Right now it's down to just one lane, in either direction and there isn't much room on the southbound side.

Crews have removed the pavement and they're excavating the dirt, leaving a sharp drop off on the side of these narrow lanes.

But the narrow lanes aren't the only problem for drivers.

"Traffic, especially during the busy times has been extremely bad,” said Bill Dudek. “Again, a typical 5 minute drive will take about 15 minutes and for people on a tight schedule, that's a challenge."

While the drivers we talked to are frustrated, they understand this needs to be done.
