ST. JOSEPH, Ind. -- St. Joseph Young Men's Society held their first ever Andrzejki dinner celebration on Sunday, known in the Polish community as the Feast of Saint Andrew.
The celebration is typically held on the eve of the saint's holiday, which is Nov. 29, and is known as a light-hearted holiday that includes fortune telling, music, food, and games for everyone to enjoy.
The Young Men's Society held the event to inspire others to celebrate in the festivities.
"The Polish heritage and Polish tradition here in South Bend goes back centuries, almost right." said Tom Majnert, trustee at the St. Joseph Young Men's Society. "So, we're trying to resurrect it. We're trying to, you know, bring back this Polish heritage, some of the Polish culture and Polish tradition. And hopefully, this is a step in the right direction."
The event had a band play polka music, and people who attended were encouraged to dance along in traditional polka dances while they enjoyed the dinner.
