Speed believed to be factor in deadly single-vehicle crash
LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- The La Porte County Sheriff's Office reports deputies responded to a single-vehicle crash around 7:58 a.m., on Thursday in the 5000-east block of U.S. 20.
Deputies say the initial on-scene investigation determined a blue 2012 Ford, driven by 20-year-old Caleb Tekker of Mishawaka, was traveling east on U.S. 20 near C.R. 500 East.
The report states that upon approaching slower traffic, Tekker attempted to pass two slower vehicles before traveling into the westbound lanes of U.S. 20.
Authorities say Tekker then crossed back through the grass median, across the eastbound lanes, and off the roadway before striking a large concrete barrier on the property of the La Porte County Highway Department.
Tekker was pronounced dead at the scene.
Toxicology test results are pending.
Deputies say speed is believed to be a factor.
