CHESTERON, Ind. -- Two motorcycles and a car crashed on I-94 near Chesterton around 8:11 p.m. Friday night.

Indiana State Police say that approximately two miles east of Chesterton, two motorcycles were seen speeding west, down I-94.

The first motorcycle driver to crash, 19-year-old Matthew Lowenthal of Valparaiso, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, Luke Tilford, the other motorcyclist, pulled his motorcycle over to the shoulder. While dismounting, he was hit by another vehicle. He sustained serious injuries and was transported for treatment.

The third vehicle involved was a 2024 Tesla. The driver reported no injuries.

This is an active investigation.
