UPDATE: South Shore Line trains on the move after striking, killing pedestrian in Gary, several trains delayed

UPDATE 4:14 P.M.: The Gary Police Department reports officers responded around 6:08 a.m. Thursday along with the Gary Fire Department to the area of East Dunes Highway and Clay Street for reports of a pedestrian struck by a train.
Authorities say upon arrival they found a South Shore Line train stalled on the tracks and confirmed a deceased adult man was nearby.
The train had 63 passengers on board at the time of the incident. No passenger injuries were reported.
Police say no foul play is suspected in the incident, and preliminary evidence suggests it may have been a deliberate act.
The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District Police Department have taken over the investigation.
UPDATE 1:52 P.M.: South Shore Line President Mike Noland confirmed that South Shore Line train #10, bound for Millennium Station from South Bend, struck a man on the tracks west of the Clay Street railroad crossing after the man walked onto the tracks and sat down with his back toward the train around 6:15 a.m. Thursday.
The man died as a result and trains were backed up for two hours before service resumed.
UPDATE TWO: South Shore Line reports authorities have cleared the scene in Gary following a pedestrian strike and released all train traffic.
Officials say trains will be on the move shortly.
Westbound train #16 will make all stops to Millennium.
Current delays include:
- Weekday Westbound train #110 - 60+ minutes
- Weekday Westbound train #16 - 45 to 60 minutes
- Weekday Westbound train #118 - 30 to 45 minutes
- Weekday Eastbound train #405 - 15 to 20 minutes
UPDATE: South Shore Line reports train service remains stopped east of Gary due to the pedestrian strike.
Officials say another extra westbound train is departing Gary Metro at 7:50 a.m. CT, making all stops to Millenium Station.
ORIGINAL STORY: GARY, Ind. -- The South Shore Line reports trains #112 and #114 are canceled for today and service was temporarily stopped after a train struck a pedestrian in Gary Thursday morning.
Crews were on scene to assess the situation.
Officials say an extra westbound train was added, departing Gary Metro at 7:05 CT, making all stops to Millenium Station.
