South Bend man charged with homicide in Van Buren County

VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. -- Troopers with the Michigan State Police Paw Paw Post are investigating a homicide that occurred Saturday around 6:49 a.m. in the 66000 block of 70th St. in Hartford Township.

Police were dispatched to the venue to investigate a reported shots fired complaint.

The report states upon arrival officers found a 35-year-old Watervliet man dead from a suspected gunshot wound and the suspect no longer at the venue.

Authorities' preliminary investigation determined the victim and suspect, identified as a 31-year-old South Bend man, were in a physical altercation when the suspect shot the victim and fled the scene.

MSP detectives then activated the Major Crime Task Force, who were then assisted by Pokagon Tribal Band, and Van Buren County Sheriff's Department.

The report sates authorities used various investigative techniques and witness statements to track down and arrest the suspect in the Fort Wayne area less than 12 hours after the incident.

The suspect was lodged in Indiana where he's awaiting extradition back to Van Buren County.

He's being held on homicide, carrying a concealed weapon, felon in possession of a firearm, and felony firearm charges.

The suspect's name is withheld pending extradition and arrangement.

Police say the case is ongoing, pending further investigation, autopsy, ballistics, and lab analysis results.

Authorities say this was an isolated incident with no known threats to the community.
