Shelton's Farm Market in Niles closing after more than 75 years

Shelton\'s Farm Market

NILES, Mich. -- A local staple in the Niles community is hoping to close its doors for good next year after 77 years of continuous operation.

"If all goes as planned, Shelton's Farm Market will be closing its doors by 2025, after 77 years of dedicated service to the Michiana community and beyond," said owner Mike Shelton.

"This decision comes with a mix of emotions: a deep sense of gratitude and accomplishment for the successes we've enjoyed, sincere pride and appreciation for our incredible team of employees and friends who have been instrumental in our growth, and heartfelt thanks to the wonderful customers we have had the honor of serving for generations."

To customers, the decision seemingly comes out of nowhere for the business that claims it is still hitting its peak.

"We are proud to be concluding our journey on our corner on our own terms, and at the peak of our achievements," Shelton said. "However, there is a time and place for everything, and it is with great humility and a heavy heart that we share this news with you. There is no perfect time to share this information due to pending inspections and finalizations, but we feel it's important to address the growing buzz on social media and beyond."

The formally family-owned market will be replaced by booming grocery retailer Aldi as the owner plans to sells the property on the corner of S. 11th Street and Bell Road.

"The good news for the community is that we believe we have found the right successor-a major retailer committed to providing continued value to our community," Shelton said. "When Aldi Foods approached us, it made the difficult decision to move on a bit more bearable. They will replace our well-worn building with a brand-new facility, promising to deliver great food at great prices, and new employment opportunities, from this location."

While the well-known location will seemingly change hands over the coming months, Shelton is considering continuing the business at a new address.

"Moreover, while our future plans are still taking shape, we are optimistic about the possibility of continuing the legacy of Shelton Farms-a new location, a new look, and better values than ever," Shelton said.
