UPDATE: Suspect charged following SBPD pursuit and water rescue

UPDATE THREE: A probable cause affidavit from St. Joseph County reveals Deron Phillips has been charged with Resisting Law Enforcement using a Vehicle with Prior Conviction, a Level 4 Felony, Resisting Law Enforcement using a Vehicle, a Level 6 Felony, and Resisting Law Enforcement, a Misdemeanor.

The South Bend Police Department reports an officer attempted to pull Phillips over after he reportedly made a quick right at a red light without stopping on Lincolnway and Wilber Street.

Documents state a police pursuit ensued, which ended in downtown South Bend where he ultimately ran on foot and jumped into the river.

Phillips was previously convicted of Resisting Law Enforcement after accepting a plea agreement in November 2022.

Phillips was sentenced in January 2023 to six months of probation. He was also charged with Reckless Driving, but that count was dropped.

UPDATE TWO: A South Bend Police Officer was patrolling in the area of Lincoln Way West and Wilber Street when he observed a vehicle commit a traffic violation.

The suspect vehicle ultimately came to a stop on the east end of the Colfax Avenue Bridge. The driver then exited the vehicle, jumped the guardrail, and entered the waters of the St. Joseph River.

The suspect, 56-year-old Deron Phillips, was rescued, taken into custody and transported to the hospital for evaluation.

Phillips is now being held in the St. Joseph County Jail, where he awaits a formal charging decision from the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office.

UPDATE: The South Bend Fire Department reports just before 1:45 p.m., Monday, the South Bend Police Department requested assistance with a person who'd entered the river by the Colfax Avenue bridge.

SBFD arrived and members of the Swiftwater Team immediately entered the water, quickly locating the person.

Personnel stayed with the individual until an SBFD boat could reach them.

The individual was then taken to Memorial Hospital for further evaluation.

ORIGINAL STORY: SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The South Bend Police Department confirmed to ABC57 that an attempted traffic stop led to a pursuit Monday afternoon.

The pursuit led to a water rescue with one person being detained with help from the South Bend Fire Department.
