Mayor Wood gives State of the City address
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- At a news conference Tuesday, the SBCSC announced that they would be working with local faith leaders and Tutor ND to raise the school system's literacy levels.
According to the school, 38% of South Bend students didn't pass the state's standardized testing in 2024.
Indiana Senate Bill 1, passed last year, mandates that schools retain 3rd graders at their current grade level if they fail to pass the state's IREAD test.
SBCSC and "We Make Indiana" are working with Tutor ND, an enrichment tutoring program, to help lower that number.
Superintendent Dr. Todd Cummings says he wants that 38% figure to be lowered to 20% with help from this program.
Tutor ND trains community volunteers how to teach children how to read. Tutor ND also places anyone who volunteers and pays them as well.
