ELKHART, Ind. - Last April, the City of Elkhart announced its amphitheater project, a $40 million development aimed at transforming the downtown area into a music hub and boost the local economy.

Now the future of that amphitheater is unclear after the Elkhart AMP Group pulled its $20 million pledge for the project.

Jamie Cross is the General Manager of Brass Elk Brewing, directly across the river from the proposed site. He says he's disappointed to hear the news about AMP Group withdrawing its investment.

“We were absolutely looking forward to that influx of business and the excitability of the downtown area,” said Cross.

Elkhart Third District Councilman, David Henke expressed concern saying that he's asked for financial records about the project for more than a year now, but to this date hasn't received them.

"It's hard to weigh the benefits and the merits of this amphitheater without knowing the numbers because that's what it comes down to, it's an investment,” said Henke.

The City of Elkhart and the mayor have said regardless of the developer they partner with, they still have a vision for an outdoor music venue right next to the Lerner Theatre on the central green property.

Aaron Mishler, City of Elkhart First District Councilman, says he initially supported the project, but gave a statement saying:

"However, my responsibility is to the taxpayers. In the end, the projected costs were too high for myself, council, and members of the Redevelopment Commission to feel comfortable with."
