NILES, Mich. -- More than 50 protestors gathered outside the Niles office of Republican Congressman Tim Walberg on Monday to deliver a letter of concern regarding Elon Musk and DOGE, the Department of Government Efficiency.
The protest, organized in-part by Cass County Democrats, took place on the corner of Main and Second Streets in downtown Niles.
Organizers say they’re upset with DOGE and Musk, claiming that the cuts made within the federal government are unconstitutional since the department is working without congressional approval.
DOGE is not officially a federal department, but instead a branch of the Office of Management and Budget within the White House.
Some, but not all of the actions taken by DOGE to cut back on government spending can be approved through an executive order by President Trump, while other moves may still require congressional approval or be upheld in court through lawsuits.
Congressman Walberg declined to comment on the event and was en route to Washington D.C. at the time of the protest itself.
