Police say jealousy over man led to woman hitting people with car and shots fired

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Court documents from St. Joseph County reveal 36-year-old Ebony Gaines is facing two counts of Battery by Means of a Deadly Weapon, a Level 5 Felony, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, a Misdemeanor, and Criminal Recklessness committed with a Deadly Weapon, a Level 6 Felony.
Gaines' charges stem from an incident which occurred on Sept. 11.
Her first court hearing is scheduled for Oct. 9.
The South Bend Police Department reports officers arrived at Beacon Heights Apartments on Sept. 11 for reports of a car crash.
Upon arrival, officer located two cars parked near the entrance to the complex.
The driver of one of the cars approached police and said the other driver, Gaines, had rammed into her intentionally before passing out behind the wheel.
Officers approached Gaines, at which point she drove away into the complex.
Police followed and found the car parked with Gaines outside the driver's door. She told police she was having a seizure and nodded off, responding to sternum rubs.
Gaines told police she had been shot at near the complex's entrance. Officers observed gunfire damage near the front of her car.
Authorities reviewed security footage and observed the crash, where they say it appears Gaines had intentionally rammed the other vehicle.
After the ramming, police say a male passenger in the victim's car can be seen shooting at Gaines' car.
Police then interviewed the victim driver and her other passenger, who stated Gaines had struck them with her car at their home on Prast Boulevard earlier that day.
According to the women, Gaines had let herself into their home. The victim driver knew who Gaines was, but the other woman didn't.
The victim told police Gaines was jealous over a man. Gaines walked around the house, demanding to know if the man was there before returning to her car, the victim said.
The two women then followed her outside, where Gaines is said to have accelerated her car into them, hitting their legs and the victim driver's right hand.
Officers observed marks and swelling on each woman's left leg. The two said as they retreated into the house, Gaines sped across the yard toward them.
The women showed officers pictures of fresh tire marks across the lawn.
After the incident at the home, the women drove to Beacon Heights to drop off the man in question.
After Gaines rammed them, the women said the man was the person who fired a gun and fled the scene when officers arrived.
