Other local businesses suffer consequences of AM General layoffs

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Other businesses near the AM General plant say the layoffs could affect what is coming off of their shelves too.

Gas stations, like the one at the corner of Bittersweet and McKinley, could be affected. Workers there say that they depend on people who work nearby to stop in to eat and buy gas.

Even before Thursday's AM General layoff announcement, the shop had noticed fewer customers.

"I'm upset because right now is really slow. A couple customers come in, but a lot of people have been laid off. Maybe no more people will come here anymore and my business will be down,” said Patl Hena, a Save and Subway employee.

The Save and Subway says it hopes business turns around quickly.
