One on one with Coach Muffet McGraw after retirement announcement

Notre Dame women's basketball head Coach Muffet McGraw announced Wednesday that she is stepping down.

The announcement was made shortly after she told the team via video conference.

As news circulated around the world, ABC57's Allison Hayes sat down with Muffet for a one-on-one interview about the life changing decision.

Former Irish player and assistant coach Niele Ivey will be the next head coach.

Ivey is young, energetic and has been a driving force in recruiting for many years.

McGraw said the grind of recruiting has taken its toll on her.

While she is leaving the program as head coach, her presence will continue to be felt on Notre Dame’s campus. She says she will stay on as a mentor with the team and may even teach sports management classes.

She will also continue to be a voice and advocate for women around the world.

Ivey has spent 17 years on Notre Dame’s campus.

She has made 9 final four appearances with Notre Dame, 2 as a player and 7 as an assistant coach.

She spent the past season as one of the only female assistant coaches in the NBA- with the Memphis Grizzlies.

She is back in South Bend now and will do a Zoom press conference Thursday.
