BENTON HARBOR, Mich. -- The Palisades Nuclear Plant shutdown in 2022 but could soon be back online.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission held a special public meeting at Lake Michigan College Thursday evening to discuss the communities concerns of the impact of a possible restart, which would be the first time that’s ever happened for a nuclear power plant in the U.S.
Folks had the opportunity to ask questions and voice concerns following an open house and presentation given by the NRC as part of the initial steps on their environmental review process.
They will take the feedback along with their findings to put in a draft document at the beginning of 2025.
Then the community will be given another chance to comment on the draft, before the next steps.
“The agency would hope to finalize this environmental review document in about a year, and then that would go in to agencies final decision as to turn on Palisades or not,” said Scott Burnell an NRC spokesperson.
