Notre Dame prepares for funeral of legendary coach Lou Holtz

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Monday will be the funeral for the legendary Notre Dame football coach Lou Holtz, and the university is preparing for large crowds descending on campus.

On Monday, a funeral mass of Christian burial will be held for the 1988 National Championship winning coach.

As the Notre Dame community prepares to say goodbye to coach Holtz, here's what you need to know.

The mass will take place at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, and will be open to the public but on a first come, first serve basis. For those who are unable to attend the service inside the Basilica, a livestream of the mass will be shown in Washington Hall, as well as Purcell Pavilion.

Once the mass concludes, the Holtz family will begin a procession that starts at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.

From there, the procession will move towards the Main Circle in the heart of campus, with a clear view of the Golden Dome.

Finally, the family will proceed down Notre Dame Avenue, where coach Holtz will be laid to rest at Cedar Grove cemetery, a ceremony the family has asked to remain private.

Due to the large crowds expected Monday, Corby Drive will be closed from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Soren Circle will be closed from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Notre Dame Avenue north of Angela Boulevard will be closed from 2 to 4 p.m.
