New York man accused of stealing over $9000
KOSCIUSKO COUNTY, Ind. -- A New York man is in jail after being accused of stealing over $9000 from a Leesburg resident's tax return.
Sheriff deputies from Kosciusko Country were dispatched to a Barbee Lake address on March 28 after a Leesburg resident was unable to file her tax return online.
The victim explained to the deputies that she was informed by the Turbo Tax filing service that her return had already been filed with the Internal Revenue Service.
The department began an investigation and confirmed with the IRS of the fraudulent filing of the tax return.
After several months of investigation, a suspect was located with the help of Bank of America. Detectives and officers from the sheriff's department traveled to Staten Island, N.Y. and met with NYPD detectives.
Officers arrested Nihal Walter Rodrigo at his residence without incident. Warrants were also issued for Rodrigo's laptop and other electronic devices for other potential victims throughout the United States.
Rodrigo waived extradition and was transported back to Indiana. He is currently being held on $75,000 bond.
