NEW BUFFALO, Mich. - The New Buffalo city council voted Monday to keep lifeguards on duty at least for one more summer.
The council had considered ending the program for liability concerns.
Jarvis Tarnowski was head lifeguard at New Buffalo Beach last summer. He's accusing city leaders of not supporting the lifeguards and failing to give them necessary supplies.
“It kind of hurts because we’re there risking our lives – I’ve risked my life many a time to save somebody else’s," he said. "And there’s not a greater feeling saving somebody and knowing that you saved their life when they could’ve died.”
Although the council voted to keep the lifeguards this summer, it will revisit the discussion in the fall to determine if the program will continue in the future.
