MICHIGAN CITY, IND.——
This holiday weekend serving as a reminder, a beautiful day at the Beach can turn into a near tragedy in just a matter of seconds. One man is still in critical condition at Franciscan Hospital in Michigan City after nearly drowning at Washington Park Beach. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources told ABC57 it was one of 5 incidents seen at that beach on just the 4th of July Holiday alone.
“On the holidays we see a vast increase in the emergency response..just because warm weather and the holidays bring people here by the thousands to the beach”, said Alex Neel.
As the number of beach goers rises this busy time of year, unfortunately the DNR says so do the number of swimmers that get into trouble on Lake Michigan.
Washington Park Beach, thankfully had plenty of lifeguards on duty for the holiday weekend.
The Michigan City Fire Department who oversees the guards adding how many other potentially incidents they are able to prevent from happening, on top of the 5 lives saved this 4th of July.
