Men charged with stealing copper wire, tools from multiple companies
Gregory Smith, Loghan Northcutt FULTON COUNTY, Ind. -- Two men are accused of stealing hundreds of feet of copper wire and some expensive tools while burglarizing multiple businesses.
According to court documents, a Fulton County Sheriff's Deputy was called to a burglary at Rochester Homes Inc. on November 24. The owner of the company said a truck trailer filled with some of their inventory had been broken into. Multiple pad locks were on the trailer which had been unlocked with a key and not damaged. The owner told the deputy the suspect had to be a current or former employee since the location of the key is only known to them. Items stolen out of the trailer included thousands of feet of different standards of copper wire and tools engraved with inventory numbers.
The deputy left and called a local salvage business to ask if any large amounts of wire were recently turned in. The business called the deputy back a short time later to inform him that a man was trying to scrap about 1,000 feet of wire. When the deputy arrived at the business, the man shared that he got the spool from 36-year-old Gregory Smith of Rochester.
The man showed the deputy messages he exchanged with Smith, which included photos of the wire. The deputy took a photo and sent it to the owner of Rochester Homes Inc. who confirmed that wire appeared to be from his business.
After reviewing the list of current and previous employees at Rochester Homes Inc., the deputy found that a man named Gregory Smith worked at the business. A search warrant was then obtained for Smith's address and executed by the Fulton County Sheriff's Office, Rochester Police and Indiana State Police. Inside the home, law enforcement found spools of wire and various tools that matched those reported stolen.
Once he was taken into custody, Smith reportedly told officers that the items came from a man named Loghan Northcutt, who had "hit" Rochester Homes Inc. two nights before. Smith said Northcutt asked him to sell some tools and remaining tools were at Northcutt's apartment next door to his residence. Northcutt allegedly told Smith he was moving the tools to his bedroom because police wouldn't check there.
According to court documents, Smith eventually admitted to police that he helped Northcutt burglarize Rochester Homes Inc. the night before. He said the two also committed a burglary at Duke Energy and some of the wire was stolen from that business. A Rochester Police Officer involved in the search warrant said he was aware of a recent burglary reported by Duke Energy.
Law enforcement then went to Duke Energy to ask if any stolen tools or wire belonged to the business. They spoke to an employee who said the tools and wire did not actually belong to Duke Energy, but they might belong to a contractor working on the property. Officers then checked with the contractor, Vaughn Industries, who confirmed they were burglarized the same night as Duke Energy. Stolen items included nearly 1,000 feet of different standards of wire, some hand tools, and a $300 Makita Hammer Drill.
A deputy brought some of the cut wire found in Smith's residence, which a Vaughn Industries employee identified as being stolen from them.
The deputy returned to the Fulton County Jail the next day where Smith was booked. During an interview, Smith told the deputy that he acted as a lookout while Northcutt cut the chain fencing around Duke Energy. Northcutt allegedly broke into multiple buildings and the power substation. The items that were stolen were taken back to both of their apartments.
Northcutt was not in his apartment when law enforcement began their investigation. After further investigation, when Northcutt was identified as a suspect, a search warrant was completed on his unoccupied apartment where police found thousands of dollars of stolen property. Northcutt was later located and arrested on a warrant, according to court records.
Loghan Northcutt is charged with Burglary, Theft, and Theft where value of property is between $750 and $50,000. Gregory Smith is charged with Burglary and Theft where value of property is between $750 and $50,000.
