NOW: Local shoppers react to tariffs amid trade war

MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- With Inflation really hitting hard, shoppers are squeezing their wallets now with tariffs on imported goods that are expected to push prices up on essentials like groceries.

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump announced a 10% tariff and reciprocal tariffs in more than 60 countries.

From produce to canned drinks financial experts say this could increase prices and lead to shortages on everyday essentials, those essential items being produced, canned goods and meats.

ABC News reports some groceries with short shelf life like avocados and bananas, experts say we can see impacts as soon as next week.

A Local shopper, Terry Crow says the Trump administration could have explored their options before making a final decision.

"The government could have gone in and done some more work, instead of just throwing a tariff on it right now. Little back, little talking to the other countries and work it out as to just shut it off right now. So it's tough being on a retired budget. It's tough to make it.” said Crow

Consumers are encouraged to pay close attention to labels to indicate where that item comes from, if it’s a country impacted by tariffs you could be paying more.

Shopper Mary Hatchley says she plans to stock up on coupons, pay attention to sale items and utilize discount stores all to save a few bucks.

“Dollar Store is a blessing, you know, and we have to have coupons, and it's just getting harder, you know, we have to pay our rent first, so we have a roof over our heads. And I never thought we'd be in this situation.” said Hatchley

Forbes reports changes are expected to come by April 5th, so keep your eyes on rising prices at the grocery store to see what prices go up in the coming weeks.
