NOTRE DAME, Ind.—The University of Notre Dame’s Director of Athletics, Jack Swarbrick, held a press conference on Tuesday following the news that Coach Brian Kelly will be leaving the Irish for a job at LSU.
“This program has never been in better shape. Thanks to Coach Kelly,” Swarbrick said.
A decision on an interim coach for the Irish has not yet been made.
Swarbrick said that Kelly came to him to resign on Monday night and did not give Notre Dame an opportunity to try and keep him. Swarbrick said he was not surprised by the news.
Swarbrick said Kelly will not coach Notre Dame in the postseason.
Notre Dame President Rev. John I Jenkins issued the following statement on Brian Kelly:
“On behalf of the University of Notre Dame, I want to thank Brian Kelly for a wonderful 12-year run as our head football coach. He led our program to great success and we wish him and Paqui the very best. Notre Dame football is one of the most storied programs in the nation and our next coach will continue a winning tradition that reflects the University’s values.”
Kelly has been Notre Dame Football’s coach for the last 12 years. He is the winningest coach in the program’s history.
Jack Swarbrick says ND hasn’t made a decision on interim head coach. Doesn’t feel a need for one at this point. If they do name one at some point, he will not be a candidate for the permanent job. @ABC57News
