SOUTH BEND, Ind. --- The 15-year-old arrested in connection to the July 3 shooting at Castle Point appeared in court for an initial hearing Wednesday.

During the hearing, the teenager acknowledged that he did pull the trigger, shooting a 10-year-old girl in the face and left her with a broken jaw.

The 15-year-old was arrested on preliminary suspicion of criminal recklessness and pointing a firearm, both of which would be level 6 felonies if tried as an adult. Prosecutors said they do not intend to try the teen as an adult, but will reserve the right to do so.

This comes after the 10-year-old victim was shot in the face on July 3 on Royal Vista Terrace in Castle Point. The incident happened during an unsupervised gathering among pre-teens and young teenagers, according to officials.

During the hearing, it was revealed that the teenager has a history of leaving home without permission and having a knife at school.

A case transfer has been requested to Marion County because that is where the 15-year-old lives and goes to school.

A dispositional hearing is set for August 17 as the judge takes more time to consider a case transfer. If granted, the date will no longer be needed.

The 15-year-old will remain detained.
