Now, a 15-year-old suspect is in custody and facing multiple charges. It all started on Saturday, July 3rd when officials were called to Castle Point apartments, finding a young girl injured at a gathering of unsupervised teenagers. Here is what has happened since.
The 10-year-old was hospitalized for a bullet wound to the jaw and is reported to be in good condition. Initial reports say the shooting was accidental but the suspect took off. Since then, detectives with the St. Joseph County Special Victims unit took over the case, arresting and then later detaining a 15-year-old.
The suspect, faces preliminary charges of criminal recklessness and pointing a firearm, which would be level 6 felonies if committed by an adult. During an initial hearing, the defendant will be informed of the charges and advised on their rights throughout the legal process. Then, additional court dates will be decided.
The suspect has been detained at the juvenile justice center for the past week. Their bond amounts, if any, will also be decided at this initial hearing. Further updates can be found on air and online.
