WATCH: Items thrown at referee during Buchanan, Benton Harbor District game Wednesday

UPDATE: On Wednesday afternoon, the Benton Harbor School District released a statement on the incident and the Michigan High School Athletic Association confirmed they have spoken with both schools that were on the court, the host school, and the official, and are awaiting the official’s report from the game as part of the process, which is standard when there is an ejection or similar negative circumstances.

The MHSAA said they are not currently investigating the referee, nor have they ever investigated his in the past.

From Benton Harbor Area Schools Superintendent Kelvins Butts:

To our school community,

I want to take a moment to address the incident that occurred following Wednesday night's boys' basketball district game. Benton Harbor Area Schools is actively investigating this matter in collaboration with our district Athletic Director, Superintendent Greg Bloomgren of Dowagiac Union Schools, Superintendent Patricia Robinson of Buchanan Community Schools, and the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA).

It is important to note that most of the outrage and disorder came from the fans and audience, not our student-athletes. Our student-athletes demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship and composure throughout this challenging situation. We truly appreciate their resilience and commend them for representing Benton Harbor with class.

The safety and well-being of our students remain our top priority, and we are committed to a thorough and fair review of the events. We appreciate your patience and support as we work through this process. Updates will be provided to the community as appropriate.

Thank you for your continued commitment to Tiger Nation and for supporting our students on and off the court.

ORIGINAL: DOWAGIAC, Mich. -- Buchanan Community Schools sent a letter to those in their district on Thursday morning following an incident that occurred Wednesday night at a boys' basketball game against Benton Harbor High School.

The game took place in Dowagiac as part of a neutral tournament for Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Division 2. The final score was 39-36 Buchanan.

Videos circulating on social media show the last minute of the game as players and fans begin to stand up when someone throws a basketball in the air which then bounces off the head of a referee.

What appears to be water bottles then fly through the air hitting that same referee at which point he falls down and is helped up by police officers in attendance.

In the letter from BCS, officials state they're coordinating closely with Superintendent Dr. Kelvin Butts of Benton Harbor Area Schools and Superintendent Greg Bloomgren of Dowagiac Union Schools to thoroughly examine what happened.

School officials say they're also in contact with leadership at the MHSAA regarding this incident, and they're taking it seriously.
