SOUTH BEND, Ind.-- Across Michiana, shelters and other agencies prepared for the arctic blast that hit the region over the weekend. This preparation included distributing supplies like blankets and coats and information like where South Bend warming centers are and their hours of operation.
South Bend weather amnesty program is run out of the center for the homeless, located at the corner of Sample and Michigan. They reported about 65 to 70 more people than normal this weekend because of the subzero temperatures.
However, they ran into some drama of their own, when heat went out in part of the building. Some families had to be moved to other spaces. Then, a pipe burst in the sprinkler system, creating a leak in the dining room. Staff and guests alike worked together to clean it up.
