Indiana Historical Society

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- The Elkhart County Historical Museum announced it will host Indiana Historical Society’s traveling exhibit, Hoosiers & Their Hooch: Perspectives on Prohibition, beginning Oct. 1.

The exhibit will be on display through Nov. 13. at the museum at 304 W. Vistula St. in Bristol.

It will feature the rise and fall of prohibition in Indiana and throughout the country.

Museum officials say the exhibit spans the dawn of the temperance movement of the 1900s, the roaring 1920s, and the repeal of a constitutional amendment during the Great Depression.

The sights, sounds, and experiences of the time will be brought to life by images and graphics from IHS's collections.

It will also touch on the era's conflicting cultures as demonstrated by historic figures such as Edward S. Shumaker of the Indiana Anti-Saloon League, as well as the bootleggers, moonshiners, and bathtub gin distillers who found their way around the law in Indiana.

To accompany the exhibit, the museum and Dragon’s Mouth Distillery in Elkhart are hosting a whiskey tasting on Oct. 9 at 6 p.m.

Reservations are required. You can reserve your spot online.
