Mother killed, 2-year-old injured after being struck by vehicle Thursday night

ELKHART, Ind. – The Elkhart County Police Department is investigating after a vehicle struck and killed a 28-year-old woman, sending her 2-year-old child to the hospital.

Thursday, around 11:37 p.m., the Elkhart City 911 Communications Center received a 911 call of a car vs. pedestrian crash with injuries near 3310 S Nappanee St. Elkhart City Police Officers and first responders arrived at the scene shortly after. Initial investigation shows that a BMW struck a woman and her child as they were crossing the street.

Elkhart Fire Department medics rendered first aid at the scene. They transported the child to the hospital for evaluation and treatment of a head injury; she was in stable condition at last information. The mother died early Friday morning from her injuries.

The vehicle driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
