UPDATE: The Elkhart Police Department has identified the deceased mother in Thursday night's incident as 28-year-old Norma Sanchez Mateos of Elkhart.

Mateos and her 2-year-old daughter were struck by a BMW, driven by a 22-year-old man, in the 3300 block of Nappanee Street.

The 2-year-old suffered a head injury and remains in the hospital receiving treatment.

Police do not have an update on the child's condition at this time.

Police say the driver is continuing to cooperate with investigators.

The investigation is ongoing.

ORIGINAL STORY: ELKHART, Ind. – The Elkhart Police Department is investigating after a vehicle struck and killed a 28-year-old woman, sending her 2-year-old child to the hospital.

Thursday, around 11:37 p.m., the Elkhart City 911 Communications Center received a 911 call of a car vs. pedestrian crash with injuries near 3310 S Nappanee St. Elkhart City Police Officers and first responders arrived at the scene shortly after. Initial investigation shows that a BMW struck a woman and her child as they were crossing the street.

Elkhart Fire Department medics rendered first aid at the scene. They transported the child to the hospital for evaluation and treatment of a head injury; she was in stable condition at last information. The mother died early Friday morning from her injuries.

The vehicle driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
