Community Build underway at Kathryn Park
DOWAGIAC, Mich. — Southwestern Michigan College and Midwest Energy and Communications (MEC) hosted its third Esports tournament, the Fiber Cup, on Saturday. Ten teams of three high school students each battled in a double-elimination Rocket League bracket, competing not only for victory but also for top prizes that included a Steam Deck handheld system for each winning team member, a $500 donation to their school, and the coveted Fiber Cup champion’s belt.
While the stakes were high for participants, the event’s primary goal wasn’t just competition. Instead, MEC used the tournament as an opportunity to connect with younger community members and highlight the benefits of its 5G Fiber Internet service. The company hopes that by engaging students through Esports, it can raise awareness and excitement about high-speed connectivity in the region
