Heavy rain could lead to increased flooding potential
We have lots of rain in the forecast over the next few days. Rain will be heavy at times, especially with any thunderstorm activity that does develop. It is important to know the two main types of flooding, and also some safety tips if you encounter flooded roadways.
There is general flooding that we get to occur from persistent rain over a longer period of time. This type of flooding will usually spark a flood advisory. We will see higher potential for this later into the weekend. There is also flash flooding. This flooding can happen rapidly, almost without any warning, and is caused primarily by thunderstorms or large clusters of heavy rain showers. This type of flooding is possible today and tomorrow, as a few rounds of heavy downpours are possible.
Given the rain in the forecast, there is the possibility of a few flooded roadways. It only takes 6 inches of water to sweep a person off of their feet, 12 inches to cause a car to float, and 18 inches for larger SUVs and trucks. If water is rapidly moving then that can make matters worse. So always remember, "Turn around don't drowned"!
