Grenade blast kills man and injures two teens in Lake County

(WRTV.com) Police in Lake County, Indiana are investigating the blast of a hand grenade that killed a man and injured two teens.

They say the family was going through a grandfather's belongings when they found the grenade.

According to a statement by the Lake County Sheriff's Office the pin on the grenade was apparently pulled, causing the detonation.

Emergency crews arrived on the scene and found the man unresponsive. He was later pronounced dead.

The two teens suffered shrapnel wounds and were taken to a hospital in the area.

Investigators say it's not completely uncommon for families to find explosive devices when they go through possessions of grandfathers or others who may have fought in wars when they were younger.

They advise everyone to be very careful when handling those devices.
