Goshen prepares for golf cart use with Rules and Registration Day May 31

City of Goshen

GOSHEN, Ind. -- Last year, the City of Goshen approved an ordinance to allow golf carts and off-road vehicles on many of the city's streets, and, now, city officials are preparing for an event that will give residents a one-stop opportunity to register their golf carts and ensure they meet legal safety standards.

The Golf Cart Registration and Inspection Roundup will take place on Saturday, May 31, and run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Central Fire Station, 209 N. 3rd St.

City officials will be on hand to inspect carts and issue permits to those that pass. The City will provide complimentary refreshments during the event.

"The Goshen City Council unanimously approved Ordinance 5184 in July 2024, following months of work by a task force of council members, City staff, police officials, and off-road vehicle (ORV) users," city officials said.

"The group designed the policy to align with existing rules in Elkhart County and nearby communities."

That change took effect in November 2024.

Goshen Mayor Gina Leichty was the first resident to register a golf cart under the new rules.

“Residents have asked for more flexible ways to get around town,” Leichty said. “This ordinance gives them that option while keeping safety front and center," Leichty said.

City officials say the May 31 roundup is designed to give residents a chance to complete inspections, ask questions, and get registered ahead of the summer events season.

"The city encourages residents to submit the online form and pay the $50 fee in advance. Officials will issue decals only after carts pass inspection," city officials said.
