GOSHEN, Ind. -- At Monday night's Goshen Council meeting, members voted 6-1 in favor of a wheel tax ordinance.
The City of Goshen had to pass something before Sept. 1 to continue receiving lane mile distribution funds, and the full community crossings funds from the State of Indiana.
The Indiana BMV estimated the city would receive $750,000 a year from this, but council members pointed out that isn't a lot of road funding.
Council members said they are more concerned with getting the community crossing funds.
The Goshen Council added an amendment which says, "Should the State of Indiana eliminate its requirement for municipalities to have a wheel/excise tax to receive full community crossings or lane mile distribution funds, the city council shall reevaluate the taxes imposed under this ordinance."
Mayor Gina Leichty also pointed out that every branch of the city has made cuts to its 2026 budget because they are losing money from the state level due to SB1.
City officials say this could lead to Goshen adding more new taxes or exploring other ways to get funding.
